DI Markus Hoyos
THE LANDLORD
The Renaissance Castle Rosenburg has been in the possession of our family since 1681. Count Ernst Karl Hoyos-Sprinzenstein undertook the most elaborate restoration works in the history of the Rosenburg in the years from 1859 to 1875. Then in 1987 large parts of the castle complex were once again renovated and refurbished in the course of preparing for the Lower Austria Exhibition in 1990. Since this time further maintenance work has been performed on an annual basis. This has led to the fact that today Rosenburg Castle is one of the best preserved Renaissance castles in Austria and is very gladly utilised as a backdrop for national and international film productions.
Today as in the past, the financing of all measures occurs almost exclusively on a private basis. A part of the financial resources necessary for this purpose is raised through the entrance fees.
Welcome!
Sense history – experience tradition
We have made this motto a guiding principle for the experience of those who visit Rosenburg Castle, be it the newly designed exhibitions rooms concerning the history of our family, the largest collection of arms in private possession or the Historical Falconry demonstrations held daily on opening days. Everything has a historical reference and shall contribute towards being able to experience history at first hand. Our festivals such as the Historical Castle Activities in the spring or the Rosenburg Knights’ Tournament in the autumn are also referred to in this context.
We look forward to your visit and wish you an unforgettable stay at Rosenburg Castle.

Family history with tradition
The origin of the Family Hoyos lies in the area of Burgos in Old Castile, the heartland of Spain. The heart-shaped shield with the two golden dragonheads in the family coat of arms refers to this geographical Region.
The two formulated titles of nobility from 1527 and 1532, which most likely served for admission to a Spanish order of knights, constitute the first written testimonials to the Hoyos family origin. The sons of Juan de Hoyos (1481 – 1538), Anton and Hans, came to Lower Austria around 1525 from Spain via Trieste and Carinthia in the entourage of Archduke Ferdinand, the future emperor. The following family members also supported the young Ferdinand and also all successive rules of the House of Austria in pivotal issues of politics and the preservation of the Catholic faith.
